Cutting Edges - The Birds

(The Birds Poster, 1963)

The Birds is a 1963 American psychological horror-thriller directed by Alfred Hitchcock, loosely based on the 1952 story of the same name by Daphne du Maurier.

The Birds runs like a romantic comedy for the first 40 or so minutes of the film. But the tone changes when birds (mostly crows and gulls) begin to attack the residents of Bodega Bay in flocks.

"When teasing out the meaning of The Birds, many critics take their lead from the hysterical woman who links the attacks to Daniels' arrival ("I think you're the cause of all of this"). This implies that the birds are a manifestation of sex, some galvanic hormonal storm that whisks sleepy Bodega Bay into a great communal lather." (Brooks, 2017)

The main character, Melanie Daniels, can be compared to a harpy, a mythological monster described as having a woman's head and a birds body and claws. This is a very obvious comparison to Daniels', since she is described as a strong, headfast, and sexually open young woman throughout the film. In fact, Hitchcock often draws to this, giving us details about her life in the conversations she and Mitch Brenner have. Not only are there personality traits that can connect the two, also physical traits. She has very long, claw-like nails, and she is considered in the 1960s a beautiful woman.

(The Birds, 1963)

As Brooks says, Daniels' arrival seems to cast a "hormonal storm" and it is well known that Harpies are also a personification of storm winds in many poems. Thus it seems only natural to draw this conclusion that Daniels' is the cause of The Bodega Bay Birds attacking out of the blue upon her arrival, although the real reason is never revealed in the film.

"But the context of the birds concentrating their fury upon a house in which a possessive and jealous mother hovers anxiously over her son is so obvious and fascinating that I rather lean to it."
(Crowther, 1963)
Jealousy is also a large theme in this film, mostly between the mother and Daniels'. The mother is jealous that someone could steal her son (Brenner) from her, and Daniels' is jealous of the mother for keeping Brenners attention on her. There's also Annie, the school teacher of Bodega Bay who used to date Brenner, and who is also still in love with him. She was chased off by the mother but encourages Daniels' to try, knowing she will most likely fail.

(The Birds, 1963)

"It is about three needy women (literally 'birds') - and a fourth from a younger generation - each flocking around and vying for varying degrees of affection and attention from the sole, emotionally-cold male lead, and the fragile tensions, anxieties and unpredictable relations between them." (Filmsite.org, 2018)

At Filmsite says, the film is not about these birds attacking people, its about jealousy of these women ("birds). All through the film these women are fighting for attention from Brenners, but in the end, after Daniels' gets attacked they realise that there's no point in bickering, because Brenners cares for them all equally.

From Script to Screen - Reflective Statement

I went into this project once again not connecting too much with what I got. I didn't see how the keywords could connect with each other. But now I see that once you can find correlations between things, you can make something out of them. I'm happy with my outcome, mostly because I never thought I'd be able to do it. But I think I should have been less ambitious. Creating an entire world just for a 2-minute film in the space of 7 weeks was too much, and it affected my work. Maybe If I had more time to develop the world Avem Motus was set in it would have turned out differently.

Next time I make a film, I need to make sure to convey what I know to the audience as well. My audience was left confused by the end, which was entirely my fault as a filmmaker, and it meant I had to fill them in after. I may take some time in the summer to revisit this project, but for now, I am happy with my outcomes, and I have learned a lot about telling stories and of filmmaking and I am excited to take this knowledge onto the next project.

Soundscapes - Image 1 WIP

Decided to upload the WIP to SoundCloud instead of wasting time making a quick video. It's quicker for WIP sound. (When it comes to the hand in they will be in video form)

I'm struggling with this one. I wanted to make it sound like the blue "organisms" are rushing in and out of the orange "nest", kind of like a busy hive. I'm not sure what, but it seems like something is wrong or missing. I'm going to keep experimenting and hopefully, I'll achieve the sound I want.

From Script to Screen - Animatic Diagetic Sound Test

I kept the music in since I like how it goes with the animatic. But I decided to test some sounds as I was going on with the animatic, and then I rendered a snippet with the sound.

From Script to Screen - Animatic Music Test

I wanted to test these scenes with some music from bensound, to see if this animatic could be done with soundtracks and not sound effects. I think it does work kind of well, but if I were to take this into a proper animation, I would try to write my own music, or hire someone to do so.

From Script to Screen - Quick Animatic Test

Something quick thing to test movement in my animatic. Not sure whether to do it like this or to have it be "jumpy" like my first animatic.

@Phil - From Script to Screen - Animatic Color Scheme

 Full Color
Sepia with only characters colored

Before I work on my Animatic properly, I wanted some feedback on what colors to go for. I'm thinking the Sepia with only characters being in their full colors would be better, it would draw attention to the characters who are the focal point of the story, but not too much that the background would get washed out.

I feel like the full color one would wash out Faigel and Enna too much.

From Script to Screen - Factory Palettes

Some quick palette options for the factory exterior.

Since I am now running out of time to be able to finish my Animatic and Pre vis in Maya, I'll be working on the environments as I come across them in the Animatic. This isn't the best way to work, but its most convenient in this situation.

From Script to Screen - Animatic test 1

A quick soundless animatic test using my basic storyboards for timing purposes.
I'm not happy with the timing for the opening sequence. So I'll work on fixing that when I work on my proper animatic

From Script to Screen - Faigel Changes

Following OGR I've made some quick minor changes to Faigel. Her neck is now short and thinner and it honestly does fit her a lot more. Next, I want to try and finish some character reference/expression sheets for Faigel and Enna.
