Invisible Cities - Reflective Statement

At the start of this project I wasn't too confident going in. I had started 2 weeks later and i have never been too confident with environments. However my experience with this course has changed that. I've learnt valuable skills in these short weeks which will no doubt aid me in the future.

I'm not too confident about my final outcome. I feel it could use a bit more work and planning, which is something I will definitely improve on come the next project. My Exterior Establishing shot I feel is my best one. I feel its very strong and conveys what I was going for well, though once again it could have used more work. My last two seemed to lose information about the city as I went on, and my planning with them wasn't the best.

All in All, my experience with Sophronia wasn't the best, and it was definitely the hardest of all of Calvinos cities for me. If I ever were to do this kind of thing with Calvinos Cities again, I would definitely choose a more descriptive city to go from, and plan my paintings better for a stronger end result.

@Phil Invisible Cities - Sophronia Interior shot thumbs and color keys

First I tried to go through a few compositions of what the interior shot might look like. With shot 1 and 2 I looked at wedding venues, but it wasn't what I was looking for. Shot 3 I tried to draw a roller coaster wrapping around the inside of a building, but it went a little wrong. And the 4th shot was supposed to be a circus but just went wrong.
With these two shots, I focused on roller coasters. Shot 5 looked too flat for what I wanted to achieve, so I tried a more cartoony feel for 6. It's not perfect but I kinda like it.
I went on with a few color keys but something still looks off about it. I find I'm really struggling with the interior of Sophronia and could use some feedback to help. Thanks!

Invisible Cities - Color Maps

First I did a few quick gradient maps in Jordan's class with a random thumbnail I made. I didn't really like any of them and chose to develop a better low shot for my city.
So I made these super quick and super rough thumbnails, choosing to develop the fourth one.
I ended up with these, and I'm going to take the first one forward in terms of color. I think the final palette could be tweaked a little more but I think i'm going to stick with the composition for my final piece and add a few more details.
I then moved onto my establishing shot and did three very quick gradient maps. I didn't like any of them and I think that is partly due to the thumbnail not being very good.
I made a new better one with better composition, and I think as a result the gradient maps came out much better. I really like the first two, and I may try to mix the palettes together a little for the final shot.

I'm going to work on my Interior shot next, and hope I come up with something I like by the end of the day. Stay tuned!

@Phil Invisible Cities - Sophronia Asset Concepts

2 different color palettes of some assets

2 quick color palettes of exterior city shot

quicker asset drawings in my sketchbook

Since my OGR Feedback, I've been experimenting not only with the color scheme of the funfair part of Sophronia but also the style of the buildings that would be there. Jordan suggested I look at the shapes of a circus to bring in as buildings. The tents being houses, helter skelters as tall apartment buildings, Maybe a Ferris wheel or two as hotels. Ball shapes could be used with different patterns as buildings too.

Invisible Cities - Inspiration Maps

Since I am behind on this project after transferring I thought instead of doing one inspiration map for each city I'd do some for the cities I really like the sound of from the excerpts. Those Cities are Diomira and Sophronia.

Invisible Cities - Sophronia, Ersilla, Diomira and Baucis Thumbnails

16 more thumbnails exploring a few more cities. At first, I really loved Sophronia, thinking it would be the city I would go forward with, but as I thumbnailed Diomira and Ersilla I found I really like them too. Now its just a matter of coming to a decision of which to bring forward and fully conceptualize.
After the OGR today I'll be doing more thumbnails of my chosen city to make up for the lack of them. Transferring 2 weeks later into this course has hindered how much I was able to make, but I think I have explored a good amount for the amount of time I've had.

Invisible Cities - Armilla Thumbnails

These are the first of my thumbnails for this brief. I know they're not the best, I never have been great with environments, but I'm excited to practice and I feel like these are a good start.

I know I said i'd only do 2 - 3 thumbnails for each city, I may have gotten a little too overexcited while doing these.

Invisible Cities - Key Notes

The first thing I did after going through the briefs was look at and listen to the city excerpts from Calvino's book. While listening I made quick notes of the key terms and phrases that I came across.

There are a few cities that caught my eye while doing this. Diomira, Ersilla, Fedora and Sophronia. However I will continue to do 2 - 3 thumbnails of all of the cities before making a final decision.

Invisible Cities - Concept Artist "Who's Who?"

When I first saw this task I immediately thought of my favourite film; The Book of Life. Not only are the character designs amazing, I also love the feel of the environments. How they're built to envoke the feeling of the Day of the Dead. How perfectly the characters fit, even in the modern day segments of the movie. Paul Sullivan and Jordan Lamatte-Wan are the two concept artists from the film I'll be focusing on, and I'll take a look at some of their work from other games/films too.
